With a university background in human geography for education, Willem-Jan Renger (1967) started as lecturer at Utrecht University before becoming an educational consultant in higher education at Utrecht University. With a focus on e-learning and integration of ICT in education he than joined the Utrecht School of the Arts, faculty of Art, Media & Technology as an internal consultant on curriculum development and quality assurance. In 1998 he joined the faculty board to become the Dean of the Graduate School, leading an MA programme in European Media (EMMA).

Since 2006 he is vice-chair of the faculty and researcher on the subject of pedagogical design for new literacy. Based on creative practise in and outside the faculty on curriculum design, he and his colleagues have developed a model for teaching and learning based on ludologic principles.

He gives frequent lectures,workshops and consultancy on the design of learning solutions for the new generation, who develop a ‘gaming mindset.'
