Research shows that culturally relevant learning resources foster greater communication in the classroom, greater task engagement, increased responsiveness to teacher expectations and instruction, and improved student performance. Culture plays a role in the ability of students to understand the curriculum, assimilate information, and perform well on tests. This from-the-trenches view of the cultural and societal influences impacting today’s urban students underscores the importance of diversity in educational publishing. Recognizing and understanding cultural diversity is crucial to the development of instructional materials all students can relate to.
